II-J. MARTHA "Mattie" LAVINIA SIBERT (1850 – 1934), daughter of George Sibert² (John David¹)

Martha Lavinia Sibert was born on 23 August 1850 in South Carolina. [1][2] She died on 6 November 1934, age 84, in Greenwood County, South Carolina. [1][2] Mattie of Abbeville District married James Harrison Mayson of Edgefield on 9 February 1869. [3] James was born on 3 September 1832 in South Carolina. [1] He died on 28 July 1900, age 67, in South Carolina. [1] James and Martha are buried together in the Mount Vernon Methodist Cemetery in McCormick County. [1]

Mattie's death certificate says she is the daughter of George Sibert and Adeline "Alaster." [2]

James's grave has a confederate marker. [1] He was a private in Co. K of the Seventh South Carolina Infantry. [4]

According to the census, in 1870, James, aged 37, and Martha, aged 24, lived in Hibler, Edgefield County, South Carolina. James was a farmer with real estate worth 600 dollars and a personal estate of 215 dollars. In 1880, James, aged 48, and Martha L., aged 30, lived in Hibler with their children Addie S., aged eight; George R., aged four; and Isabelle C., aged one. James was a farmer. In 1900, James H., born in September 1832, and Martha L., born in August 1853[!], lived in Hibler with their children, Rupurt, born in September 1876; Corra, born in June 1880; Jasper, born in May 1882; and Janie, born in October 1886. James and Martha had been married 32 years; Martha had had ten children, and five were living. James and Rupurt were farmers, Corra was a dress maker, and Jasper was a farm laborer. [5]

In 1910, Mattie was a 60-year-old widow. She lived in Callison, Greenwood County with her daughter Susan's family. In 1920, she lived with Susan's family in East Greenwood, McCormick County. [5]

Children of James Mayson and Martha Lavinia Sibert:

II-J-1. Adaline Susan Mayson was born on 1 March 1873 in Edgefield County. [1][2][6] She died of a carcinoma of the gall bladder on 22 March 1951, age 78, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Bert Langley in Greenwood. [1][2][6] She married Robert Thomas Mayson on 1 November 1891. [1] Robert was the son of John C. and Eliza (Freeman) Mayson. [2] He was born on 8 November 1869 in McCormick County and died on 13 December 1958, age 89. [1] Susan and Robert are buried in the Mount Vernon Methodist Church Cemetery.

According to the census, in 1910, Robert T., aged 40, and Susan A., aged 37, lived in Callison with their children Julia L., aged 17; Lilly A., aged 12; and Alma F., aged two. Susan's mother, Mattie, also lived with them. Robert was a farmer. Susan had had six children, and three were living. In 1920 Robert T., aged 50, and Susan A., aged 49, lived in East Greenwood with their children, Alma, aged 11, and Rubie L, aged nine, and Susan's mother, Mattie L. In 1930, Tom, aged 60, and Susan, aged 57, lived in Greenwood with their children Alma, aged 22, and Ruby, aged 20. Tom was a farmer. [5]

According to her obituary, Susan A. was the daughter of James Harrison and Mattie (Sibert) Mayson. She was survived by her husband; her sister, Mrs. I.C. Harrison; her brothers, G.R. and J.J. Mason; and her daughters Mrs. F.C. Reames, Mrs. Langley, and Mrs. Leon Murphy. [6]

Children:

• Julia L. Mayson was born about 1893.
• Freeman Mayson was born on 25 September 1894 and died on 23 September 1897. [1] He is buried in the Mount Vernon Methodist Church Cemetery. [1]
• Lilly A. Mayson was born about 1898.
• Bertha Mayson was born on 12 November 1899 and died on 6 April 1900. [1] She is buried in the Mount Vernon Methodist Church Cemetery. [1]
• James Thomas Mayson was born on 19 July 1902 and died on 6 November 1902. [1] He is buried in the Mount Vernon Methodist Church Cemetery. [1]
• Alma Irene Mayson was born about 1908. [1] She married John Bert Langley on 11 July 1939 in Greenville. [7]
• Ruby Mayson was born on 23 August 1910 and died on 23 October 2000, age 90. She married Leon C. Murphy. [1] Leon was born on 24 August 1914 and died on 12 January 1980, age 65. [1] Ruby and Leon are buried in the Tranquil Methodist Church Cemetery in Greenwood, Greenwood County. [1]

II-J-2. George Rupert Mayson was born in September 1875 in South Carolina. [1][2] He died on 18 February 1958, age 82, in McCormick. [1][2] He married Leila Mae Flinn. [1][2] Leila was the daughter of Henry Clay and Caroline (Rush) Flinn. [2] She was born on 30 April 1885 and died on 27 June 1963, age 78. [1][2] George and Leila are buried in the Bold Spring Baptist Church Cemetery in Callison. [1]

George's death certificate says he was the son of Col. James Harrison and Mattie (Sibert) Mayson. [2] There does not seem to be any evidence that James was a colonel.

• Carolyn Marie Mayson was born on 13 July 1911 and died on 6 August 2005, age 94. [1] She married John Blanding Steward. [1] He was born on 21 May 1905 and died on 17 April 1972, age 94. [1] Carolyn and John are buried in the Lake City Memorial Park in Lake City, Florence County, South Carolina. [1] Children:
  • Robert Lee Steward was born in 1929 and died in November 1975. [1] He married Frances Ester Gilliland. [1] She was born on 11 September 1927 and died on 27 December 2021, age 94. Robert and Frances are buried in the Hill Crest Memorial Park in Pickens, Pickens County, South Carolina. [1]
• James Henry Mayson was born on 16 December 1912 and died on 11 December 1972, age 59. He married Myrtle Sue Cogburn. [1] She was born on 28 September 1918 and died on 31 January 2016, age 97. James and Myrtle are buried in the Bold Spring Baptist Church Cemetery. [1]
  • James Holley Mayson was born on 1 April 1944 and died on 20 May 2009, age 65. He is buried in the Bold Spring Baptist Church Cemetery. [1] He married Myrtle Juanita Posey. [1] She was born on 24 September 1937 and died on 6 January 2022, age 84. [1] She is buried in the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina. [1]
• Edna Mayson was born on 15 August 1915 and died on 4 January 1999, age 83. [1] She married Frank J. Capra. [1] He was born on 19 October 1907 and died on 25 July 2003, age 95. Edna and Frank are buried in the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Joliet, Will County, Illinois. [1]

II-J-3. Isabell Cora Mayson was born about 1879 in South Carolina. [3] She died after 23 March 1951. She married ___ Harrison.

II-J-4. Jasper James Mayson was born on 25 June 1880 in Edgeworth County. [1][2][8] He died on 14 January 1970, aged 89, in Greenwood. [1][2][8] He married Julia Lillian Reames. [1][2][8] She was born on 19 January 1887 and died on 15 October 1975, age 88. [1] Jasper and Julia are buried in the Mount Vernon Methodist Church Cemetery. [1]

Jasper's birth certificate and obituary say he was the son of James Harrison and Mattie (Sibert) Mayson. [2][8]

Jasper was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1928 to 1932. [8]

According to the census, in 1930, Jasper, aged 49, and Julia L., aged 43, lived in Hibler with their children, Addie R., aged 20; William E., aged 18; Emmie L., aged 16; James M., aged 14; Joseph J., aged ten; and Mary J., aged seven. Jasper was a farmer; the four oldest children were farm laborers. [5]

Jasper's obituary says he was survived by his wife, Mrs. Julia Reames Mayson; his three daughters, Mrs. W.M. (Ruth) Harper, Mrs. W.C. (Emmie) Jaymes, and Mrs. Holley (Mary) Whatley; his son James Mayson, 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. [8]

Children:

• Addie Ruth Mayson was born about 1910. She married W. Marvin Harper.
• William Edgar Mayson was born on 10 October 1912 in Edgeworth County. [2] He died on 4 November 1968, age 56. [2] His body was found in a wooded area near his parents' home in Edgeworth County; no foul play was suspected. [1][2] He married Eliza Bussey. [1][2] She was born on 30 June 1918 and died on 27 December 2003, age 85. [1] She married second Walter Dorn. [1] She married third Robert Winn. [1] William and Eliza are buried in the Overbrook Cemetery in McCormick, McCormick County. [1] William was a veteran of World War II. [1] At the time of his death, he was described as a disabled veteran. [2] He was survived by his two sons; three sisters, Mrs. Holley Whetley, Mrs. Marvin Harper, and Mrs. W.C. James; and his brother, James Mayson. [1] Children:
  • William Dean Mayson was born on 12 April 1957 and died on 9 November 1991, age 34. [1] He is buried in the Overbrook Cemetery. [1]
  • Marvin Jasper Mayson was born on 23 January 1959 and died on 2 April 1978, aged 19. [1]
• Emmie Mayson was born about 1914. She married W.C. Jaymes.
• James Mark Mayson was born on 5 September 1915 and died on 27 November 1990, age 75. [1] He married first Helen L. Lagrone. [1] She was born on 3 August 1919 and died on 28 May 1997, age 71. She is interred in the Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Hodges, Greenwood County. [1] James married second Lizzie Beggs. [1] She was born in 1929 and died in 2004. [1] James and Lizzie are interred in the Newbury Memorial Gardens in Newbury, Newbury County, South Carolina. [1] James was a truck driver. [1] Children:
  • Janie Ruth Mayson was born in 1939 and died on 12 December 2021. [1] She married Calvin Boyd Lewis. [1] He was born on 27 April 1937 and died on 16 July 2019. [1] Janie and Calvin are interred in the Greenwood Memorial Gardens. [1]
• Joseph J. Mayson was born about 1920.
• Mary J. Mayson was born on 6 May 1922 and died on 2 January 2017, age 94. [1] She married Hollie Self Whatley. [1] He was born on 5 July 1916 and died on 20 April 1998, age 81. [1] Mary and Hollie are buried in the Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Kirksey, Greenwood County. [1] Children:
  • Roxie Whatley was born on 2 January 1943 and died on 2 December 2022, age 79. [1] She married ___. Children:
    • Nathan Mark Smith was born on 8 November 1962 and died on 9 December 2023, age 61. [1]

II-J-5. Janie Mayson was born on 29 August 1883 in Edgefield County. [2] She died on 1 September 1962 in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, where she had lived for 35 years. [2] She married Irvin Charles Harrison. [2] He was born on 27 March 1885 and died on 25 November 1975, age 90. [1] Janie and Irvin are interred in the Elmwood Memorial Gardens in Columbia. [1]

Janie's death certificate says she was the daughter of James H. and Mattie (Siebert) Mayson. [2]
